The ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· Honors College will officially close the Honors House at 1818 Copper Lane on June 1, 2025, as it prepares to move into a new, modern space in the Rasmuson Library later this summer. The move marks the end of a notable chapter in the college’s history and the beginning of an exciting new era.
The house at 1818 Copper Lane has served as the hub for the Honors community for over two decades. Once the original chancellor’s residence, the building became home to the Honors Program in 2004, following a period of significant transformation under the leadership of Professor and Honors College Director Roy Bird.
Bird, an English professor, facilitated the program’s move from its first home at 515 Copper Lane to the current location down the street at 1818 Copper Lane, which offered over 2,400 square feet of space, more than double the size of the original house. The house at 1818 has since offered hundreds of students private study spaces, showers, laundry, and many other amenities. It has been a home away from home for many, and will be remembered as a cornerstone in the history of the ºÚÁϺÚÀúÊ· Honors College.
As the Honors College looks toward the future, staff will operate in a hybrid capacity throughout June and July. The new space in the Rasmuson Library is expected to open in late July or early August, offering even more accessibility and collaboration opportunities in the heart of ºÚÁϺÚÀúʷ’s academic campus.
In the meantime, student resources such as showers and laundry are available at the Wood Center and Student Recreation Center, and students can contact Honors College staff by email:
Madara Mason – emason@alaska.edu
Kaitlynne Rice – krice20@alaska.edu
Sophie May – sjmay3@alaska.edu
Eleanor Guthrie – emguthrie2@alaska.edu
The Honors College team is excited for the opportunities the new space will provide and looks forward to welcoming students to their new home soon. Stay tuned for more updates as opening plans are finalized.
